O'mambo - Sofia Arteaga

Sofia ArteagaSofia was born in France though spent her childhood in South America, returning to France many years later. Moving between the European and Latin environments and with her parents influence, she has found a balance in her life between the two cultures.

Music was a strong element in her early years though she had no professional involvement until in her 20s. Then in Lyon, she took singing lessons and practiced alone for a few years. At the end of 1993 she moved to Martinique where her musical career really began.

Sunshine was the first group that Sofia performed with, a small group of reggae musicians and singers. They performed regularly during her time in Martinique.

Voz e Violão

In 1996 Sofia and David Champagne formed the Brazillian music duo, Voz e Violão. They started in Martinique and then moved to Paris where they played the club and small venue circuit for more than a year.

Okassa

At the same time as singing with Voz e Violão, Sofia was invited to sing with Okassa, an African group singing native Ghanan music. She joined Gwenn Danilet and Natali Bertrand as the vocal section of the group.

Femmes de Légende

The single, Legendary Woman, was a special recording made in Paris to celebrate Womens Day 1997, with all procedes going to l'Association Femmes Mythiques. Sofia played a part in the vocal section for the single.

Wonderland

Sofia assisted the french pop-group Wonderland with vocals for their self-titled album in the late 90s.

Mana

On returning to the south of France, she came back to South American music and formed a group, "Mana" with her father and her uncle, Carlos Arteaga. As Mana, they played together for many years, mainly in France, based in the French Riviera.

CADEM

CADEM is a French musical association that allows people to participate in a vocal group as either a hobby or as training for a professional career. Between 2002 and 2004, Sofia took part in many festivals, shows and singing events with CADEM, and within the association, she and 5 others sang as a group called Equinoxe.

A few years ago, after Mana had run it's course, Sofia and Emilio created the duo "O'mambo", their current musical group.

She now lives in Ireland where as well as being an active musician, she teaches music to kidergarden and primary level students (up to 8 years of age) at the Lycee Francais d'Irlande in Foxrock, Dublin.
